Kupwara: An hour-long gunfight took place between militants and the army in Keran village of Kupwara district on Wednesday morning, but there is as yet no report of any casualties. The army is conducting a massive search operation in the area to locate the militants.
Official sources said that a group of militants on Wednesday morning crossed the Line of Control (LoC) near Kashan Nala. The militants were on their way down the mountains to valley areas when the army intercepted them.
Official sources said that when the army challenged the militants, they opened fire at the army. A gunfight ensued which continued for an hour. When the guns fell silent, the army launched a massive search operation which was still continu ing when this report was filed in the evening.
Local sources said that it was a group of five heavily armed militants who went back to the other side of LoC after the gunfight with the army. But the army believes that some of them may have been killed or they may be still on this side of LoC.
Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to locate the militants, official sources said.
SSP Kupwara AS Dinkar confirmed that a gunfight broke out in the Keran sector along the LoC on Wednesday morning, but there is no report of any killing or injury. He said a search operation has been launched in the area.
On July 21, the army had claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid in Tanghdar sector along the LoC. The army operation at that time continued for two days but no militant’s body was found.
Earlier this month, two search operations were launched by government forces in Handwara and Kupwara but both ended without any encounter with militants.
