Srinagar:Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed by government forces in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday triggering off protests by the locals.
The encounter broke out in Mehmaan Mohalla, Lal Chowk in the wee hours today after two LeT militants, hiding in a house opened fire upon a joint team of army, Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and CRPF during a cordon and search operation, a senior police official told Kashmir Reader.
The government forces returned the fire triggering off a fierce gunfight. In the six-hour long gun-battle, two LeT militants were killed by the government forces.
“Two militants have been killed in the encounter. Their identity is being ascertained,” SSP Anantnag Mohammad Altaf Khan told Kashmir Reader.
However, police sources identified the two slain militants as Binyan Yousuf Dar of Khudwani and Abid Hussain Bhat of Suzan village of Doda.
Earlier, a policeman sustained injuries after being hit by a stone during clashes with protesters.
Groups of youth took to streets at Lazibal, Kadipora, Chee and other neighborhood localities of Lal Chowk this morning and pelted rocks at the government forces deployed to foil any protests. Government forces had also sealed all entry and exit points to ensure anti-militancy operation is carried out without any trouble.
