SRINAGAR: After nearly one-and-a-half month, militants mounted another attack in Srinagar, this time killing a paramilitary trooper of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and injuring another at Batamaloo, a stone’s throw from the police headquarters and the heavily guarded civil secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
IG CRPF Ravideep Sahi told reporters that militants fired upon the CRPF men and ran away from the spot. “It was a hit-and-run. One of our men was killed and another was injured,” Sahi said.
A police spokesperson in a statement said that ‘militants this afternoon fired at the security forces personnel at Batamaloo near Fire & Emergency Services (station).”
“Taking advantage of the crowd in the area, the assailants managed to flee,” the police spokesman said. “In the process, two security forces personnel got injured in the firing incident. They were subsequently shifted to the nearby hospital for medical attention where one security force jawan, Ct Shanker Lal of 23Bn CRPF, succumbed to his injuries. The other jawan has now been discharged from the hospital.”
Following the attack, government forces cordoned off the area and launched a search which was still continuing when this report was filed late in the evening.
On June 15, militants had carried a similar attack on police near the SMHS Hospital in Karan Nagar. The attack left two cops injured, one of whom succumbed to his injuries later. The attackers could not be found that time as well.
Hizb operational spokesman Burhan-ud-din in a tele-statement to KNS news agency claimed responsibility for the attack.
A police spokesperson said that a case had been registered and an investigation begun. “The initial investigation into the case has led to some tangible leads on which police is working,” the spokesperson said.
