Sartaj Madni quits VP post in morning, gen secretary and treasurers follow in evening

Srinagar: Sending out a signal of concession to dissenters and rebels, all PDP office-bearers including Mehbooba Mufti’s uncle Sartaj Madni quit from party posts on Monday.
Madni voluntarily submitted his resignation from the Vice President’s post on Monday morning, a day after the PDP held meetings with party leaders in Srinagar. In the evening, PDP chief spokesperson Rafi Mir said, all PDP office bearers including the general secretary and treasurers submitted their resignation to party president Mehbooba Mufti.
PDP general secretary Peerzada Mansoor Hussain was also under attack from a section of legislators as he had been defeated in the 2014 assembly elections.
A group of PDP legislators led by influential Shia leader Imran Ansari had publicly denounced party chief Mehbooba Mufti for promoting nepotism. The elevation of her maternal uncle Sartaj Madni, who was defeated in the 2014 assembly polls, was cited as the prime example of this nepotism. Madni had been appointed to the post after the death of late former chief minister and PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 2016.
Madni’s quitting is the first attempt by the PDP to placate the disgruntled legislators of the party.
