SRINAGAR: Only the finance ministry performed up to expected standards during the three years of the PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir, a report by a Delhi-based think tank has said.
The south Indian state Kerala maintained its position as the best governed state, in rankings for this year published as the Public Affairs Index 2018. J&K plummeted by six positions in the governance index from its ranking in the year 2016. J&K is now at 21st place among Indian states, down from the 15th spot it was at in 2016.
Only the ministry of sacked finance minister Haseeb Drabu earned points for its fiscal management. It rose from the 11th rank in 2016 to 7th this year.
The Public Affairs Index ranks the performance of Indian states on indices like essential infrastructure, social protection, women and children, crime and law, health, governance, financial management and economic freedom.
The results, as per the information released on the think tank’s website, have been derived from government data on 100 indicators on nearly 30 subjects. The study began in 2016 to assess governance infrastructure and this year, an index on children was added to study how child-friendly each state is.
