Defunct irrigation pump station hits paddy cultivation in Uri village

BARAMULLA: A defunct pump at lift irrigation station in Ijara village of Boniyar in this north Kashmir district has curtailed irrigation facility to hundreds of Kanals of paddy land.
Local farmers of Ijara village said that government sanctioned an irrigation pump for the paddy lands and people celebrated the day three years ago. “The farmers not only cultivate paddy fields but the people of the area were using it for other purposes. However, from past one month it is completely defunct and we are facing hardships while paddy lands are completely dry,” they said.
Gulam Rasool, a local said that most of the paddy lands are dry and we have no option but to wait when department will repair it.
He appealed the concerned department to repair the pump as soon as possible so that farmers can sleep in nights.
An official in the irrigation department said that there was some problem on its motors but the contractor who took its responsibility of repairment is on strike with other contractors.
When contacted, Executive Engineer Irrigation department Uri, Sarjeet Singh said: “I don’t know that the lift irrigation station is defunct. But I assure you that I will visit the area and will see where the problem is. If there is any problem we will repair and restart it within no time.”
