Anantnag: A trainee police constable, promoted recently after serving as a Special Police Officer (SPO), was found dead Saturday afternoon a day after he was abducted by unidentified gunmen from his home in Kulgam district.
The slain policeman has been identified as Muhammad Saleem Shah, resident of Motelhama village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
A senior police officer in the district confirmed the killing while talking to Kashmir Reader.
“Yes, we have found his body. He has been shot dead after being tortured,” the police officer said, adding that his body was found about 3 kilometres from his home.
The officer said that locals in Ghaat area of Khodweni in Kulgam informed the police about a body lying on the road in their village.
“A team was deputed and the body was retrieved. The body has been sent for medico-legal formalities,” the officer said.
Suspected militants had barged into Shah’s home late Friday night and abducted him at gunpoint. Following the abduction, police had launched searches in several areas to find him.
Shah was undergoing training in Kathua and was home on vacations when the abduction took place.
Shah’s abduction and murder is the fourth such in south Kashmir since May last year.
Army officer Lt Umar Fayyaz, also from Kulgam, was abducted and killed by suspected militants from a relative’s home in Shopian in May last year.
In June this year, army man Aurangzeb was abducted from Shopian district while he was on way home for vacations. He was found shot dead the next day.
On July 6 policeman Javaid Ahmad Dar was found shot dead hours after he was abducted from his home in Vehil village of Shopian district.
