In Kulgam, ‘chance encounter’ of militants with army
Anantnag: Militants fired at a Road Opening Party (ROP) of the paramilitary CRPF along the heavily manned Khannabal-Pahalgam (KP) road here in Mattan area of Anantnag district Saturday afternoon. The attack caused no loss of life or injuries to anyone, though.
The KP road, being the main, traditional route for Amarnath Yatra, is heavily guarded and several bunkers manned by government forces dot the road.
Today’s firing incident was reported at about 1 PM in Bamzoo area of Mattan.
SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan confirmed that an attack was carried out in the area. “A CRPF party was fired at, which was duly retaliated. No one has been injured,” Khan said, adding that a manhunt was launched to nab the attackers.
Following the firing, government forces cordoned off the nearby Nambal village, from where the militants had opened fire, and carried out searches in the area.
The militants, however, had fled by then.
Later in the day, at about 3:20 PM, militants opened fire on a patrol of the army’s 1 RR in paddy fields of Havoora village in Kulgam district. No one was injured in the firing.
A senior police officer said that it was a “chance encounter”. “The army men patrolling the area and the militants roaming in the area came face to face. The militants escaped after a brief exchange of fire,” the officer said.
The area was cordoned off and efforts were made to try and nab the militants, he said, but the militants had made their escape.
