Kulgam cop’s killers slain in encounter: Police

Srinagar, July 22: Police on Sunday claimed to have killed three militants responsible for the abduction and murder of a cop in south Kashmir’s Kuglam district on Saturday.

“In a significant breakthrough, concerted efforts of the security forces resulted in the elimination of the prime accused involved in the yesterday’s abduction and killing of Constable Mohammad Saleem,” a police spokesman in a handout issued here said.

The spokesman said that the operation was carried out on the basis of credible inputs about the presence of the militants in a cluster of houses.

“Three militants were killed in the encounter. They were affiliated with LeT and HM and were involved in Saleem’s killing,” the spokesman said.

Abu Mauwiya, one of the slain militant, the spokesman claimed was also involved in a number of civilian killings.

“Police probe is on for ascertaining complicity of the other co-conspirators who assisted in the commission of the gruesome crime leading to the death of Saleem,” the spokesman said.

Police also claimed to have recovered 2AK- 47 rifles and a carbine from the encounter site.
