Gunfight rages in south Kashmir’s Kulgam

Srinagar: A fierce encounter has raged in Khodwani area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district between government forces and the militants.

An army team joined by the police and CRPF laid a cordon around main chowk Khodweni early this morning and started search operations, official sources told Kashmir Reader. When the joint team started advances, the militants hiding in a residential house opened fire at them in a bid to break the cordon.

“The forces returned the fire triggering off encounter. The exchange of gunfire is going on,” official sources said, adding “2-3 militants are believed to be holed up in the house,”

Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid claimed that the militants trapped in the area were responsible for killing a police constable on Saturday.

Constable Muhammad Saleem Shah was found dead with bullet marks in in Ghaat area of Khodweni on Saturday. A trainee police constable, Shah was killed by unidentified gunmen, a day after he was abducted from his home in Motelhama village of the district.

Meanwhile, internet service has been snapped in the area to stop flow of information about the ongoing gunfight.

The encounter was going on when the last reports came in.
