Discuss carpet industry, problems, future prospects

SRINAGAR: A high level delegation of Carpet Export Pomotion Council visited Srinagar to discuss the industry as a whole, problems and future prospects.
The delegation comprise of Additional Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ratnesh Kumar Jha, Chairman CEPC, Mahavir Pratap Sharma, 2nd Vice-Chairman CEPC, Umer Hameed, , Member COA, CEPC, Gulam Nabi Bhat, Member COA, CEPC, Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad and Executive Director CEPC, Sanjay Kumar.
Director Handicrafts, J&K was also present on the occasion.
The delegation visited IICT at Srinagar. In the meeting, several decisions were taken for the benefit of the handmade carpet industry in J&K which included opening of CEPC office in Srinagar, setting up of raw-material bank for wool, setting up of dying and washing units, setting up of common effluent treatment plant and expansion of design bank of IICT.
Additional Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ratnesh Kumar Jha suggested all stakeholders to form a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the purpose and adding that carpet industry will get a big boost from after implementing the decisions taken in the meeting.
Industry Representatives from J&K requested CEPC for marketing support to the J&K carpet exporters. The matter of reduction of 12% GST was also discussed.
Chairman CEPC, Mahavir Pratap Sharma apprised the industry representatives about the domestic and international marketing activities/shows of the council and requested for their active participation and assured all kind of support.
The chairman further added that hopefully “the GST on carpets will come down from 12% to 5% in the GST Council meeting” to be held in Delhi on the 21st July (today), as was assured by India’s finance minister and textile minister.
Some of the upcoming activities of the council include Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles in Shanghai (China) from 27-30 August, 2018, Household Expo, Moscow (Russia) from 11-13 September, 2018, Carpet Show at Mumbai from 14-16 September, 2018, Index Design Series at Dubai (UAE) from 16-18 September, 2018, Buyer Seller Meet in Hotel Grand, Oslo (Norway) from 24-25 Sep 2018 and Hotel Scandic Victoria Tower Hotel Stockholm (Sweden) from 27-28 Sep 2018, India Carpet Expo at Varanasi from 21-24 October, 2018, Domotex International Trade Fair at Hannover (Germany) from 11-14 January, 2019, Domotex USA at Atlanta, USA from 28 Feb. to 2 March, 2019, India Carpet Expo at New Delhi from 10-13 March, 2019, Domotex Asia China floor at Shanghai (China) from 26-28 Marc, 2019.
The delegation also met Principal Secretary Industries, Shailendra Kumar who assured the council members all possible support.
