Handwara: A militant has been killed in a gunfight between government forces and militants in Batpora forests in Magam Handwara, army said.
Army spokesman Rajesh Kalia told Kashmir Reader that army has killed one militant and recovered a weapon during the operation that began Thursday afternoon.
Earlier government forces had received information of presence of a group of militants in the forests of Batpora. A joint team of forces, including army’s 47 RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, cordoned off the area. As the forces reached near the suspected spot, militants fired at them, after which a gunfight began, sources said adding the firing continued for half an hour.
The firing had reportedly stopped during evening.
All roads and link routes leading to Batpora had been sealed by government forces and no one was being allowed to the area, local sources said. They added that reinforcements had been rushed to the area.
Some reporters who tried to go to Batpora were reportedly stopped by the army and not allowed to go further.
According to police the recovered body is of foreign militant, belonging to the LeT outfit.
The body of the Pakistani militant was recovered from the encounter site along with a weapon and other incriminating material, he said. More details about the identity of the slain militant are being ascertained, the police official said.
