SRINAGAR: Scores of Seasonal labourers from Mechanical irrigation department on Thursday held a protest demonstration here in Srinagar demanding the monthly salary as per the SRO 520.
The protesters from three Sub-division of Mechanical irrigation department of south Kashmir Include Padganpora (Awantipora), Samboora and Anantnag Mechanical irrigation department assembled here in press enclave and raised slogans in favour of their genuine demands.
Nazir Ahmad, Seasonal Labour from Mechanical irrigation department at Padganpora (Awantipora) said that they are working in the Mechanical irrigation department from last 12 years as seasonal labourers and are performing their duty regularly as per the orders of the department.
“As per the government rules, the Seasonal labourers can work in any government departments for a period of three months. But we are working in the department from March to October”, Nazir said.
He said that “department is paying us less wages as compared to other casual labours who are working in other departments.”
“If we work for a period of eight months every year, why are we paid only for three months,” asked Nazir.
Abdul Hamid, another Seasonal Labour from Mechanical irrigation department said, “We are nearly 250 Seasonal Labourers which are working in three Mechanical irrigation departments. We are demanding monthly salary like labourers of the other government departments are getting.”
“We are facing a financial crisis due to the attitude of the state government. We too have families, it is difficult for us to manage our daily needs”, he added.
The protesters requested the Governor NN Vohra to intervene in the matter.
