Gunfight breaks out in north Kashmir’s Handwara

Srinagar:  A gunfight between militants and government forces broke out on Thursday in Batpora, Magam area of north Kashmir’s Handwara.

The gunfight broke out after a joint team of Police and Army was fired upon by hiding militants, sources said.

Reports said that intermittent exchange of firing was going on in the area and government forces were strengthening the cordon.

“Encounter at Batpora in #Handwara.SFs on job,” police said in a tweet.

Earlier government forces cordoned off Batpora area of Magam in north Kashmir’s Handwara after receiving input about the presence of militants, sources said.

As the forces reached near a particular spot they were fired upon by hiding militants triggering a gunfight, they said.

A police officer confirmed to Kashmir Reader the presence of two to three militants in the area.
