Controversy over list of Tourism Dept trainees, massive protest held

SRINAGAR: The Tourism Trainees Union held a massive protest demonstration in Press Enclave here on Saturday, demanding the immediate release of the list of Tourism Department trainees.
The list, which includes tourist facilitators, landscapers and gardeners, has been on hold since 2016.
The said list is on hold because of allegations put forward to the department by professional tourism degree holders that the list is “politically propagated” and those on the list are “back door” entries.
The tentative selection list includes only holders of certificates of completing the three- and six-month crash course, instead of professional degree holders.
The Tourism Trainees Union appealed to Governor N N Vohra to intervene in the matter so that the department can take a step forward and engages the trainees.
The Tourism Department trained 3,000 trainees through the Institute of Hotel Management for the tourism trainee posts in 2016 after the short list of candidates in the same year.
“The Tourism Department did everything in legal procedure, there is nothing like backdoor entries and political favouritism,” said Union president Tashook Ahmad Sheikh. “Fast-track entries of tourism trainees must be put forward,” he added.
One of the protesters said, “These professional candidates do not exist anywhere and they do not deserve to make demands because they missed the chance. Now they claim to be the professional ones.”
While professional tourism degree holders “missed the chance” and tourism degree holders claim that none of them figure on the short list, the department notification did state that graduate and 12th pass candidates would be eligible for the job profile, rather than only professional degree holders, the protesters said.
One of the professional degree holders, Mudasir Wani, told Kashmir Reader, “How could we compare a Master’s degree holder with a Class 10 and 12 pass in a common job profile?” Furthermore, he added, “We did not miss the chance but we by will skip because the department named it as class IV.”
The department has assured that they will absorb professional degree holders in their technical branch and the non-professional in the non-technical branch.
