‘Frequent closure of Jamia Masjid hurts people’s sentiments’

SRINAGAR: Mutahida Masjlis-e-Ulema (MMU) and Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid (AAJM) have denounced the disallowing of congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid for the 10th time this year.
In a joint statement issued here, MMU and AAJM strongly protested the frequent closure of “Kashmir’s religious and spiritual centre”, saying it not only hurts the sentiments of the people but is a grave violation of their religious freedom.
“Using military might to confine people and impose such curbs is a blatant interference in our religious matters that is bound to evoke anger and resentment among the masses,” the statement said and demanded an immediate halt to these “anti-people” policies imposed by the ruling regime.
The statement also condemned the continuous detention of Valley’s chief cleric and MMU and AAJM chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his Nigeen residence and time and again barring him from carrying out his religious duties.
