Charar-i-sharief: A mob from Watkulu village appeared in Doudkhotu area of Charar-i-Sharief on Friday afternoon and set ablaze the residential house and a cowshed of a family, who they allege are involved in the murder of a youth whose body was found at Yousmarg after he went missing from home.
According to locals of Dodhkhotu village, as many as 2,000 people from the nearby Watkulu area appeared in the village at about 3:30pm and set on fire the house and cow shed of Ghulam Qadir Dar.
The angry mob also damaged the orchards belonging to the family and ransacked many houses of neighbours. They also smashed window panes of the Public Health Engineering building.
Villagers of Doudkhotu said they tried to stop the mob but failed. They said the mob threatened to damage their property as well. “A huge number of people came and burned the house and sawed off the fruit trees of the Dar family. We tried to stop them but they didn’t listen to anyone. They threatened us that they will also set our house on fire if we intervened in the matter,’’ said Ghulam Hassan Dar, the brother of Ghulam Qadir Dar who was visiting his brother’s house and was present at the time of the incident.
As the place where the incident happened is a hilly area, it gave the mob an upper hand over the police, which faced many difficulties in trying to disperse the violent mob.
A police vehicle was overturned by the mob after which police used tear smoke shells and fired a few warning shots in the air. According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the cops on duty used “maximum restraint” while dealing with the violent mob. The situation in the area was still tense when this report was filed.
“Miscreants in the afternoon on Friday set one residential house and a hutment ablaze at Doodhkhuto area over some personal animosity. We have taken cognizance of the incident and an FIR has been registered in this regard and the investigation is underway” police said in a statement.
According to police sources, all the suspects in the case were already in police custody and investigations were going on.
Sameer Ahmad, a Class 12 student, was found dead at Yousmarg this Tuesday. He had gone missing from home on June 27.
