SRINAGAR: A complete shutdown was observed on Thursday by the Muslim community in Kishtwar in the Chenab Valley region to protest against killings of civilians in Kashmir valley by government forces, reports said.
The shutdown call was given by Islami Markazi Majlis-e-Shoura, Kishtwar. Majority of the markets, business establishments and educational institutes owned by Muslims in Kishtwar district were closed while public transport remained largely off the roads.
Imam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar, Farooq Ahmad Kichloo, told Kashmir Reader that the shutdown was observed to register protest against the unabated civilian killings in Kashmir, especially in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Kulgam districts, by government forces. “It is also to express solidarity with the people living in Kashmir valley,” he said.
“All the shops remained closed and even the other (Hindu) community supported our call,” he said, adding that both the communities respect each other’s sentiments.
