Kupwara: Sepoy Mukul Meena, a commando of the Indian Army, was killed in a gunfight with militants in Kandi area of Kupwara on Wednesday afternoon. Sources said that following inputs of presence of a group of militants, a cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by the army’s 47 RR in Sadu-Ganga forests of Kandi Kupwara on Wednesday morning. Commandos of the 4 Para regiment assisted the army unit in the operation.
In the afternoon, when army reached near a suspected spot, militants hiding there opened fire. The army commando was wounded and he was shifted to army hospital Dragmulla where doctors declared him bought dead.
The sources said that two other troops were injured in the gunfight. They said that after heavy firing from the militants’ side, the army called reinforcements and started a massive search operation which was continuing when last reports came in.
Senior Superintendent of Police SSP Kupwara AS Dinkar confirmed that one army commando was killed in an encounter with militants in Kandi area of Kupwara. “Yes, one soldier was killed in Kandi Kupwara Wednesday afternoon in an encounter. I don’t know about any other injury,” the SSP told Kashmir Reader.
Two days ago, a non-local militant was killed in a gunfight between army and militants in Magam area of Handwara in Kupwara district.
