Handwara: A non-local militant was killed by the army in Magam area of Handwara, police said on Monday. Handwara Senior Superintendent of Police Gulam Jeelani in the afternoon said that a search operation for other militants is continuing in the forested area.
“One Pakistani militant has been killed so for and the search operation is still continuing,” Jeelani said.
Local sources said that the militant was killed late in the evening on Sunday and forces recovered his body in the morning. There has been no exchange of gunfire since the killing of the militant, they said.
They added that a group of four militants had recently entered this side of Kashmir and one of them had been killed in an earlier encounter with the army. The army and other forces were searching for the three others since then and finally traced them on Sunday evening.
Army sources said that a CASO (cordon and search operation) was launched by the army’s 47 RR along with other government forces in the woods of Magam on Sunday evening after information of presence of some militants. When the government forces reached near the suspected spot, militants hiding there opened fire, they said. The operation continued all night and in the morning the militant was killed, they said, adding that the operation is still continuing.
Srinagar-based spokesperson of Indian Army, RK Panday, confirmed that a militant has been killed in Magam and the operation is still continuing there.
