KULGAM: One son killed and another battling for life in hospital. For a poor, village-dwelling family in Kulgam, this particularly cruel trick that death has played will be a torment till the end of their lives.
Irshad Ahmad Lone and Zahid Ahmad Lone, young men both, were among five civilians hit by the army’s bullets in Havoora village today. Irshad couldn’t make it alive to the nearby primary health centre, but Zahid did, barely. He was soon shifted to the district hospital, and from there to Srinagar.
“Irshad worked as a labourer. This morning he had tea at home and went out soon after army soldiers came to our village,” Muhammad Shafi, Irshad’s cousin, told Kashmir Reader.
A relative said that Zahid worked as a salesman at a medical store in Anantnag town.
“Their father is a broken man now. We have stopped mourning and started praying that Zahid survives at least,” the relative said.
Local sources said that both Irshad and Zahid were present at the spot where civilian protests against the army were taking place.
“When the army soldiers fired, both of them were hit,” a local source said.
The relative said that the Lone family is poor and the brothers worked day in and day out to meet the ends.
Some local youth have started a drive to raise money for Zahid’s treatment. “We hope we can at least contribute a little. He is one of us and in need of our support,” a local youth said.
