Srinagar: The government on Friday detained the top resistance leadership as well as activists of all the major resistance organisations either in their house or in police stations.
While Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house detention since 2010, his aide and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairperson Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai also continues to be under house detention for more than a month.
On Friday, a posse of policemen reached the Nigeen residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and detained him at his house. Mirwaiz was scheduled to address the weekly Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Srinagar.
In a similar development, the police detained JKLF chairperson Mohammad Yasin Malik from his Abi Guzar office and detained him at Kothi Bagh police station.
The government also imposed restrictions in several parts of downtown particularly around the Jamia Masjid.
The district authorities also barred Friday congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid. Massive deployment of forces was made in the area.
A Hurriyat (G) spokesperson said that all the frontline activists of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Hurriyat Conference (G) have been detained by the police, purportedly ahead of the second “martyrdom” anniversary of Hizb commander Burhan Wani.
The Joint Resistance Leadership has called for a complete shutdown on July 8 to observe the “martyrdom” anniversary of Burhan Wani.
