Baramulla: The district hospital Baramulla is facing shortage of doctors including gynaecologists for a long time now, making the healthcare suffer.
Few days ago a video clip went viral on social media in which a youth used abusive language against officials and doctors of the hospital against shortage of doctors. The video led to protests by doctors annoyed by the abusive language.
Sources in the hospital said that the maternity department of the hospital faced the most problems as it has only three doctors available in place of nine.
“We are receiving over 150 patients every day but due to shortage of gynaecologists we refer some to Srinagar hospitals as only three surgeons cannot manage several operations in a day. How is it possible that only three doctors run the north Kashmir’s biggest hospital 24×7,” a doctor at the maternity section said.
He said it was a tough task to deal with patients (in labour) and their attendants, and said the government should provide more doctors and paramedical staff.
Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Syeed Masood confirmed that there were only three gynaecologists posted at the hospital against a requirement of nine.
However he said that the Health department has provided three more gynaecologists to the hospital who will be joining this week.
