Srinagar: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has failed to restore and repair the marriage hall of Barbar Shah Baghwanpora in Baba Demb area, leaving locals aggitated.
The deplorable condition of the marriage hall at Barbar Shah is causing inconvenience to residents as they are not able to fully use it for wedding purposes.
The outside appearance of the hall seems fine but the real picture contrasts with it.
According to locals, the marriage hall has been a key place when it comes to marriages in the area. Due to the space problem in their homes many families of the area celebrate marriages and other functions in this hall, “We committed a big mistake by booking this hall for our cousin’s marriage. This is not in a condition worth for marriage. The color of walls of the ground floor is totally worn out and presents a shabby look,” Furkaan Ahmad, a local, said.
“The bathrooms are not in a condition to use. We regret why we booked this hall at an expense of Rs 20,000 for just two days,” he added.
He said they have to decorate even indoors at the time of Baraat as the corridors of the hall are very dirty. “The ground floor is completely damaged as the walls are burnt,” he said.
As per official records, around fifteen marriages are being celebrated in this marriage hall in a month. “Government has turned a blind eye towards this issue and it appears they haven’t spent a penny over its renovation after 2014 floods,” said Bashir Ahmad, a shopkeeper near the marriage hall.
Around 18 employees of SMC are working in this marriage hall which includes ward officer and sweepers. “They are just passing the buck and don’t do anything. Our locality approached many times to them but they do not pay any heed towards the issue,” Ahmad further said.
When contacted, SMC Commissioner Riyaz Ahmad Wani said: “We will look in the matter and renovate the hall soon.”
