Srinagar: In an attempt to tackle young girls and women stone-pelters in Kashmir, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is training over 500 women commandos to deal with the female stone pelters, a media report said on Monday.

As per the reports in situations of women pelting stones on government forces, the women commandos would take lead and their male counterparts would assist them.

Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, the director of the paramilitary force said to TOI that while women personnel were deployed in Kashmir earlier, their use in handling extreme situations was limited.

According to the reports the special women’s unit of the CRPF is trained in combat, special operations and all kinds of weaponry including pump action guns, shot guns used for firing PAVA shells, chilli-filled grenades, tear gas shells and pellet guns. The unit is now being familiarised with the topography and dynamics of violence in the Kashmir valley and are being readied for night-time deployment as well by training blindfolded.

The women troopers will be equipped with lightweight body protectors, helmets, wooden sticks, bullet-proof jackets and lethal and non-lethal ammunition. They would be armed with assault rifles as well so that they can retaliate in the case of a militant attack.

Following 45 days of induction training at the force’s Humhuma recruitment training centre in Srinagar, the trained women commandos would likely be deployed in disturbed belts of Srinagar, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Budgam and Anantnag.
