Srinagar: National Front deputy chairman, Altaf Hussain Wanisaid that he has told the Human Rights High Commissioner at UN in Geneva during his address that noted journalist Shujaat Bukhari was killed hours after he welcomed the UN Human Rights Report about Kashmir.
“I would like to bring to the notice of this Council the assassination of noted human rights defender and Journalist ShujaatBukhari that he was killed hours after he welcomed the UN’s Kashmir report through a tweet,” National Front deputy chairman, AltafHussainWani told the Human Rights Council in Geneva during his address.
“On June 2, two weeks before his assassination in an area controlled by Indian army, ShujaatBukhari tweeted: For last 24 hours I am being trolled for pasting a photo of Srinagar young man run over by an Indian army vehicle. India should realize why the Kashmir youth have lost fear of death,” Wani told Council.
“India has brazenly rejected the Kashmir report by the Office of the High Commissioner which is based on facts and figures from Indian government sources,”Wani told the Council and added “and now we have Human Rights defenders being killed in Kashmir.”
India is blocking the Kashmir report and threatening Kashmiri rights defenders. If this is the behaviour of the largest democracy, I wonder what the Indian officials have left for dictators and thugs,” Wani told the UN.
He demanded that the Council must remain seized of the situation in Kashmir, and bring India’s sordid rights record into scrutiny through an international investigative commission, as recommended by the High Commissioner.
