SHOPIAN: Violent clashes between government forces and local youth erupted in Daramdora village in Keegam area of Shopian after forces launched a crackdown in the village on ‘intelligence inputs’ about presence of militants.
As soon as a joint team of army, CRPF and police special operations group (SOG) arrived in the village, scores of youths hit the streets and began pelting the troops with stones. Locals said that the troops hit back with tear smoke shells and also fired bullets, one of which hit Jahangir Ahmad, resident of Pashpora village, in his abdomen. The injured was referred to district hospital Pulwama from where he was referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment.
Earlier in the morning, another such operation was launched at Hendow village of the district. This operation ended peacefully and without any contact established with militants.
Late Friday evening, government forces had conducted searches in Pehlipora village. The searches continued till midnight but they, too, ended without any trace of militants.
A police official said that the cordon in Daramdora village is still intact and searches are being conducted.
Mobile internet services were suspended in the district in the morning and still remain snapped.
Medical Superintendent of district hospital Pulwama, Dr Abdul Rasheed, told Kashmir Reader that one person was brought to the hospital with firearm injury on abdomen, and that he was referred to a Srinagar hospital.
