Baramulla: Foot and Mouth disease which broke out in many villages of north Kashmir has led to the death of many animals from past one month while hundreds other have fallen sick.
Locals of Uri, Boniyar, Narvaw, Tangmarg, Kandi in Baramulla, Mawar, Langate, Handwara, Lolab and others in Kupwara districts said that due to the disease break out farmers lost large number of animals including cow, goat and sheep, while others hundreds are sick.
However local complained that concerned department of animal and sheep husbandry has failed to curb the disease in the area.
A group of farmers of Handwara said that large number of their livestock died in Bungus valley due to the foot and mouth disease.
“Foot and Mouth disease is common among the animals when animals are nearby forests for grazing in near forests. The department used to setup veterinary camps in higher areas, but from past two years no such camp was setup in these areas resulting in loss of animals. The doctors of the concerned department are selling medicine for the disease in private and the officers are in deep slumbe. People are forced to buy the medcines at higher rates from open market, ” a local farmer of Mawar Handwara said.
