ANANTNAG: Two militants of the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit have been killed during a gunfight in Hayuna village of Tral in Pulwama district, while one more militant is believed to be holed up, police said on Tuesday.
Four army man and a CRPF personnel as per sources, have also been injured during the gunfight.
“The injured troops are being treated at the army hospital,” an army source told Kashmir Reader.
IGP Police, Kashmir Zone Swayam Prakash Pani, confirmed the killing of two militants, adding that one more militant is believed to be holed up at the encounter site.
According to reports, a joint team of government forces reached Hayuna village at about 4:00 PM Tuesday afternoon and launched a massive Cordon and Search Operation (CASO).
“There were specific inputs regarding presence of militants in the area,” a senior police officer told Kashmir Reader. “The area was being searched when militants opened fire,” he said.
The officer said that the militants holed up in the house of a slain militant opened indiscriminate fire while making a bid to escape.
“They failed at the bid but an army man was injured in the initial burst of fire. The fire was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” the officer said.
Violent clashes erupted in the area as soon as the CASO was launched. Announcements were made in the area urging people to come out and “save our mujahideen brothers”.
Hundreds responded to the announcements, witnesses said, and rushed towards the site of the encounter where tear smoke shells were fired to disperse them. The protestors kept regrouping and clashes continued even as the gunfight raged on in the area.
No one was injured during the clashes till last reports came in.
Firing, too, was going on while this report was being filed.
