Srinagar: Police on Friday said they have arrested a suspect who was seen in a video checking on Shujaat Bukhari’s body after he was shot at inside his car. Addressing a press conference Inspector General Kashmir SP Pani said, “A video that was captured by a person who was present on the spot shows a suspect getting closer to the bodies and as someone pulls out one of the bodies from the car, the suspect is seen picking up a pistol and leaving,” Pani said.
He added that the police have arrested the accused and recovered the 9mm pistol. The accused has been identified as Zubair Qayoom, a resident of Saderabal in Srinagar.

Police said they have formed a Special Investigation Team headed by DIG Central Kashmir to investigate the assassination of Bukhari.
Late Thursday evening, the police released CCTV footage of three men on a bike who are suspected to have carried out the killing. The faces of the rider and the man sitting at the last are hidden by a helmet and a mask. The man in the middle is seen holding what seems to be a sack of weapons. His face is blocked from the camera by the third man.
Bukhari, 52, was given police protection after an attempt on his life 12 years ago.
In 2006, Bukhari was abducted by unknown gunmen who at that time tried to shoot him from close range. Miraculously, the shooter’s gun got jammed while Bukhari kept running for his life.
Bukhari’s assassination is being seen in the Valley as handiwork of an ‘agency’, whether Indian or Pakistani. The Indian government has already blamed militants for the killing while militants have accused the Indian government. Everyone is hoping that the police investigation will uncover the motive behind the killing.
