SHOPIAN: Bakers at the Meminder village of Shopian have got a name for their tasty Kulchas and Bakerkhani (kinds of bread). Among the 15 or so bakers in the area, however, two are very popular.
The two shops belong to two brothers, one of whom died some time ago.
Ghulam Muhammad Sofi, one of the brothers, said that people from Srinagar, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Pampore , Anantnag, Sopore, Baramulla, Banihal have been buying buy Kulchas from his shop.
Muhammad’s brother Javid Ahmad was a famous baker, and according to locals, people would for weeks to get bread prepared by him. His death, some time ago, was widely condoled in the area.
The two shops have been known for the quality and taste of breads.
“I heard from my father that we are preparing breads since my great grandfather’s time which is more than a century,” Muhammad Ilyas, son of Ghulam Muhammad told Kashmir Reader “Even doctors tell people to eat the breads from our shop because quite a few times they took our breads for sampling and found them good for health,” he said.
The Sofi family said that they only prepare two types of breads ‘Kulcha and Bakirkhani’, as the demand for the two items was too high.
“We don’t prepare items like the other bakers do, we get orders for marriage ceremonies and other functions but at the time of festivals we have to do so due to the continues requests from people,” one of the family members said.
Muhammad said that he has never compromised on the quality of breads. “The number of people visiting us and their trust itself tells the quality of our products. This year we are going to start preparing Bakery items too,” he said.
A woman who had come from Bijbehara said that they were buying Sofi’s items since years and they get more stock on the eve of festivals.
