Army soldiers erase graffiti, pelted with stones

Shopian: Clashes between government forces and protesters erupted in DK Pora area of Shopian district on Tuesday after army soldiers were pelted with stones when they were trying to erase pro-freedom graffiti from walls.
Witnesses said that an army team reached the village and started erasing pro-freedom slogans and graffiti from walls in public spaces. When local youths pelted the army soldiers with stones, they left the village after firing several shots in the air. They soon returned along with men from the police’s special operations group (SOG) who started firing tear smoke shells at the stone-throwing youth. Eyewitnesses said that as many as 300 people assembled in Bonpora locality of the village, raised slogans, and hurled stones on the government troops.
The clashes lasted for quite some time, though there were no reports of injuries to anyone.
Shopian Senior Superintendent of Police Shailendra Kumar Mishra could not be reached for his comments despite several attempts to call his phone.
