SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday arrested Choudhary Rajinder Singh alias Babby from Rajasthan who was absconding after a case was registered against him at Hirnagar police station for abusing the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti during a rally.
An FIR was lodged by state police after a video showing him abusing Chief Minister went viral last month.
Talking to Kashmir Reader, Director General of Police S P Vaid, said that the special team of Kathua police on Sunday arrested Rajinder Singh, brother of former forest minister Choudhary Lal Singh in Rajasthan.
“He was on run, after a case for abusing Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti during Dogra Swabiman Rally in Hiranagar on May 20, was nabbed from Udaipur in Rajasthan,” Vaid said.
He said a special team of Kauthua police went to Udaipur in Rajasthan and arrested Choudhary Rajinder Singh from there.
A video widely shared on social media showed Singh addressing a gathering in Kathua where men reciprocated and cheered at abuses hurled against the chief minister. A few people in the audience were seen carrying the Indian national flag. On May 21, an FIR was registered against Singh, alias Babby for using derogatory language against the chief minister.
Earlier this month, the district police through an advertisement in local newspaper have requested people for information which might lead to the arrest the accused.
Singh made the alleged remarks during a rally, organised by his brother a day earlier from Lakhanpur to Hiranagar to press for a CBI inquiry into the brutal rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua.
He was booked under section 509 of RPC and section 66 and 67 of IT Act at Hirnagar police station.
Singh’s brother Lal Singh, who was forest minister till recently, was asked to quit after he along with another BJP minister Chander Prakash Ganga, addressed a rally organised by Hindu Ekta Manch in support of the accused of raping and killing an 8-year-old girl.
