ANANTNAG: About a dozen youths were arrested from the premises of a mosque in main town Anantnag after clashes on Friday afternoon that saw intense teargas shelling and stone-pelting.
As per local sources, local youths assembled outside the town’s Hanifia Jamia Mashid after offering congregational prayers, then took out a march to mark the day of “Al-Quds”, observed in support of the Palestinian freedom movement.
“As the youth were marching towards the Lal Chowk area, police deployed near Reshi Bazar used tear smoke shells to disperse them,” a local source told Kashmir Reader.
The sources said that following the tear smoke shelling, the youths threw stones at the government forces and it triggered intense street clashes. Some people were reported to have sustained minor injuries during these clashes.
While the clashes continued for the better part of the day, police later in the afternoon barged into the local Hanifia Jamia Masjid and detained about a dozen youths from the premises of the mosque.
Clashes continued for a while even after the arrests were made and ended towards the evening. The clashes led to a shutdown in the area for the better part of the day.
Anantnag SSP Altaf Khan confirmed that about a dozen youths were arrested during the clashes. “No one was injured during the day, however,” Khan said.
