Anantnag: A weapon-snatching bid was foiled by an alert policeman guarding the house of a former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator, here in Wanpoh area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday afternoon.
No one was injured during the attempt and no gunshots were fired either. The incident took place at about 3pm.
As per police reports, suspected militants — believed to be two to three in number — tried to snatch the service rifle of a policeman who was guarding the house of former MLA Abdul Ghaffar Sofi in Wanpoh area.
“The alert policeman held on to his rifle and a scuffle between the militants and the policeman ensued,” a senior police official said.
He said that the militants, sensing trouble, fled the spot while the policeman was able to save his service rifle.
A joint team of government forces reached the spot and searches were carried out to try and nab the attackers, but they had escaped by then.
