Kupwara: Claiming that it foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Army on Wednesday said it killed three “heavily armed” militants in a gunfight.
Army officials said that soldiers of the 17 JAK regiment saw suspicious movement in the wee hours of Wednesday near the Roshni Post in Machil sector along the LoC. The soldiers challenged the militants but they opened fire, resulting in a gunfight in which three “heavily armed” militants were killed.
The area is far from any civilian habitation and journalists are denied entry. The army and police are the only sources of information, so this correspondent could not independently verify the army’s claims.
Army’s Srinagar-based spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia confirmed that an infiltration bid was foiled by army in Machil sector and three militants were killed.
He said the search operation in the area is going on “to look for other militants who may still be there”.
