Discusses challenges faced by women due to conflict
SRINAGAR: Noted human rights activist Irom Sharmila called on National Conference provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani at party headquarters ‘Nawa-e-Subha’ here on Tuesday.
An official statement issued here said that Sharmila discussed her own experiences fighting for human rights and sought inputs on the impact of conflict and turmoil on women in Kashmir.
Wani welcomed Sharmila and commended her for her “inspirational fight” against injustice and her work on human rights. “Women face the brunt of turmoil and uncertainty and like elsewhere, women in Kashmir have also faced the grave consequences of turmoil and instability. The need of the hour is to protect their rights and to give them the enabling environment they rightly deserve,” he said.
“National Conference has always persevered to empower women and to defend their rights. It was Madar-e-Meharbaan who pioneered women empowerment in J&K and we continue to be guided by her legacy of trying to give women equal opportunity and representation in every sphere of life,” the NC provincial president said. “Our Women’s Wing has been empowered for this specific purpose and we are leaving no stone unturned to give women due representation within the organisation.”
