Srinagar: Despite authorities boasting of streamlining traffic in Srinagar city, severe traffic jams was witnessed at many places from past many days, leaving commuters fuming.
The areas where huge traffic jam was witnessed include commercial hub Lal Chowk, Jahangir Chowk, Lal Ded road, Hari Singh High Street and many other places of the capital city and till evening.
“Traffic department is focusing on the movement of ministers and VIP’s only, no one cares about common people. No improvement is visible despite traffic department boasting about various measures,” said Nazir Ahmad, a minibus driver.
Commuters said that traffic jams have increased in various areas in the city because of the road side hawkers and vendors and also authorities have failed to prevent wrong parking on roadsides.
“Traffic department should take action against the violators and offenders who are responsible for traffic jams,” said Parvez Ahmad, a daily commuter. “It took me thirty minutes to reach Batamaloo from Lal Chowk,” he added.
Tahir Gilani, the Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police of Srinagar city, said, “We are trying our level best to ensure smooth traffic movement in Srinagar city. The street vendors occupying footpaths and people parking their vehicles along the roadsides are major factors in the traffic jams.”
“Also due to construction of new flyover from Jahangir Chowk to Rambagh, traffic movement has been affected at Jahangir Chowk. The volume of traffic has also increased in the city due to the opening of the darbar move and the start of the tourist season in the Kashmir valley,” he added.
SSP traffic sought peoples cooperation and advised them to follow the traffic rules so that the traffic moves smoothly and people shall not have to face inconvenience.
