BUDGAM: Despite government ban, illegal extraction of stones, boulders and sand from streams is going unabated in this central Kashmir district.
The locals said that the extraction of sand and boulders is going on in Arizal, Beerwah, Rathsun and other areas of the district. The extraction has caused damage to the agricultural land of the area as the extraction in these streams has led to decrease in water level.
Arizal, Hardepanzu, Sail, Kanegund and other areas of Sukhnag stream are the worst hit by this illegal extraction.
The locals said that scores of tippers, tractors, and JCB machines extract sand and boulders from these streams and transport it to other areas.
“Several years ago, there were dozens of streams in this area. Ironically due to illegal extraction of sand and boulders, the water level in these streams has decreased. Now, we are forced to fetch water after covering a long distance,” said Ajaz Ahmad Dar a local.
The locals appealed the higher officials to look into the matter and take measures to stop the illegal extraction in streams here.
