Baramulla: The army claimed to have killed two non-local militants in a gunfight in Qaziabad area of Handwara on Wednesday night.
Army officials said that soldiers of the 32 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) were patrolling the forest areas of Qaziabad on Wednesday night when a group of militants fired upon them. The army retaliated to the fire and a search operation was launched when the gunfire ceased from the other side. No bodies could be found in the dark and the operation was suspended for the night, but the suspected spot was put under a tight cordon.
Army officials said that on Thursday morning, a search party recovered bodies of two unidentified militants from the suspected spot along with arms and ammunition including two rifles and other material.
An official of the army said that there were reports of a group of militants roaming in the area, mostly in the villages close to forests of Handwara and Kralgund. He said the army, however, did not expect the presence of militants in the area until they hurled a hand grenade and opened fired on the patrol.
The official said the army professionally retaliated and killed two armed militants. He called it a big success for the army.
