Anantnag: Suspected militants looted about Rs 1 lakh 72 thousand at gunpoint from a branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank here in Mahend area of Bijbehara on Monday.
It was the second such robbery in south Kashmir in the last ten days. On May 18, gunmen took away more than Rs 3 lakh from a JK Bank branch in Khodweni area of Kulgam district.
Today’s incident took place at about 3pm in the afternoon. “Two gunmen entered the branch, held the staff at gunpoint, and decamped with the money,” a senior police official told Kashmir Reader.
He said that the militants also took away two 12-bore rifles from the guards at the branch.
“The militants had made no efforts to cover their faces and they have been captured in the CCTV footage. Efforts are on to identify them,” the official said.
Bank robberies started in south Kashmir soon after the Modi government’s announcement of demonetisation of high-denomination currency notes in November 2016. More than a dozen robberies have since taken place in the southern part of the valley.
This year, two robberies have been carried out, both in the month of May.
