Sopore: Residents of Mazbugh and adjoining villages in Rafiabad are annoyed over the delay in completion of a vital bridge across Pohru Nallah that connects a large area with Sopore’s fruit mandi.
The bridge connects villages like Ladoora, Achbal, Dobagh, Asafa colony in Rafiabad with the fruit mandi.
An old bridge exists in the area but it is so narrow that only one vehicle passes at a time, leading to massive traffic jam in summers, when a number of trucks laden with fruit move towards the mundi.
The work on the bridge was started in 2012, but so far only pillars have been raised halfway. The bridge is being constructed by the Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC).
“The area is experiencing the worst traffic jams, and patients and students are suffering in particular,” Barket Hamid Khan, a resident of Achabal said.
“The authorities have ignored the importance of this bridge. It is the key route to fruit mundi for fruit growers of adjoining areas,” khan added
“The slow pace of the work and dilapidated condition of the roads in Mazbugh and surrounding villages itself speaks of the incompetence of the authorities,” said M Yaseen, a teacher. When contacted, Assistant Executive Engineer, Road & Buildings (R&B), Division Sopore Saleem Akhter said the project was under the JKPCC.
The concerned engineer JKPCC, Mohammad Ayub, told Kashmir Reader that the work on the bridge was stopped for three years due to not availability of funds.
“Now funds has been released and we started work again. Almost 45% construction has been already done and remaining will be completed as soon as possible” he added.
“Next year we will hand over the bridge to concerned department if fund will are available on time” he added.
