Srinagar: Dozens of Contingent Paid Cook education workers were arrested and nearly half a dozen others were injured on Wednesday here when police foiled their proposed Secretariat gherao march.
Hundreds of employees under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Contingent Paid and Cook Employees Association (J&KCPCEA) assembled in Pratap Park here in the afternoon holding banners and placards demanding implementation of SRO-308 and raised slogans against the government.
As soon as the protesting employees came out of Pratap Park and started marching towards the Civil Secretariat Srinagar, police swung into action and bundled dozens of employees including many women and Employees Joint Action Committee’s Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani, into vehicles and were taken to Khoti Bagh police station.
Police baton charged and used pepper sprays to quell the employees who were reluctant to leave the roads and were reassembling after every police action.
Many employees were injured in police action and the stampede thereof in which many employees including Mohammad Altaf, State Vice-President of the association, were injured. He was shifted to Bones and Joints Hospital Barzulla. Many women were also injured one among them severely. She was rushed to hospital for treatment by the police.
“We had planned to march up to Civil Secretariat Srinagar but police used brutal force against us and used pepper spray even in the month of Ramadan. They arrested many of our colleagues including women,” said Mohammad Shabir Reshi, Spokesperson of JAKCPCEA.
“How can they announce new watch and ward posts when they are not regularizing those employees who are already working in the department. If our demands for implementation of SRO-308 and regularization are not met by fourth of June we will again plan the secretariat gherao and government will be responsible for that,” Reshi warned.
