NITE to roll out 4-year integrated courses BA.Ed, BSc.Ed programmes

NEW DELHI: The proposed National Institute of Teacher Education (NITE) will be responsible for the roll out of the four-year integrated BA.Ed and BSc.Ed programmes, a committee formed by the HRD Ministry has recommended. The programmes are for teachers from pre-primary to secondary and senior secondary schools. The ministry had constituted a committee of experts last year to prepare a comprehensive paper for the establishment of a Central University of Teacher Education. However, on the basis of a report submitted by the committee, it was decided to establish the NITE. “The NITE is neither expected to nor can address all the existing lacunae in the system, it, however, would attempt to address some of the key disconnects in the field, meet the professional requirements of teachers and teacher educators, provide policy guidelines and establish benchmarks in the field of teacher education,” the panel’s report said. It would also formulate models of curriculum transaction, develop innovative training practices and cater to the specialised areas of research and development, the report said The institute will have to “relook at education holistically than in a compartmentalised approach, and roll out the fouryear integrated BA.Ed and BSc. Ed programmes for teachers from pre-primary to secondary and senior secondary”. Developing discourses in education to lead national policies and practices at par with emerging thoughts, research findings and initiatives in teacher education globally are among the other responsibilities of the NITE. The institute will also have to play an advisory role to the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) and the HRD Ministry on planning, research, funding, quality benchmarking and related policy matters in teacher education. It will have to provide research evidences and workable innovative models and practices to support policy formulation and undertake research on different aspects ranging from the psychology and sociology of learning, according to a concept paper developed by the committee for NITE.
