Bijbehara: A grenade attack here in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district on Wednesday left at least ten civilians, including three women, injured – one of them critically.
Four of the injured have been shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment.
As per eyewitnesses and police reports, the explosion took place in the busy Goriwan market at about 11:55 AM.
“The explosion created panic in the busy market as everyone ran for cover,” eyewitnesses said.
Police said that the grenade was aimed at a forces’ vehicle that was moving on the highway. “The grenade missed its target and exploded by the roadside, leaving ten people injured,” a police official said.
The injured were rushed to the Sub-District Hospital nearby. “We later referred four of the injured to Srinagar for specialised treatment. One of them is seriously injured and is in a critical condition,” Dr Showkat, Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital, said.
He said that all the four referred to Srinagar were sent to SMHS Hospital.
Today’s attack was the second militant attack in just over a week’s time in Bijbehara town. On May 15, a policeman was killed and another was seriously wounded after militants opened fire on their vehicle, less than a kilometre away from today’s grenade attack site.
Following the grenade explosion today, the government forces carried out searches in the area and beefed up the security along the stretch of the highway.
