BARAMULLA: Cross LoC passengers and other people, including security men, drivers and employees, are facing hardships near the Kaman post, Uri, due to non-availability of basic facilities.
The passengers and other people said that they have to stay at Kaman post for hours while completing travel document formalities, getting vehicles and passengers checked and carrying out transfers of cash. However they also face several additional problems there due to the shortage of drinking water, food and washroom facilities at the last checking point along the Line of Control (LoC).
Not only passengers who cross the LoC on Monday through the Karwaan-e-Aman bus service, but drivers who cross with commodities throughout the week and government employees, such as those of the Tourism department, customs officials, and security personnel including policemen, are also facing such problems when they have to stay at this last checking point.
Those who cross the LoC frequently said that in 2005, when the cross-LOC peace bus service was started, the Tourism department constructed several structures at this last checking point and they had also opened a fast food restaurant near the checking point where the government provided free food to those crossing. However, owing to lack of supervision and monitoring, it was later closed.
The passengers and other people demanded proper facilities like drinking water and washrooms near the post so they don’t have to face such inconvenience during their future stays. They appealed to the government to develop the site and ensure proper facilities for travellers.
Sub Divisional Magistrate, Uri, Baseer ul Haq Chowdery said that the matter has been already taken up with the Tourism department and that “we hope they will resolve the issue very soon”.
