Srinagar: The police registered a case under Section 509 RPC (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) as also under Section 56 Information Technology Act against Choudhary Rajinder Singh, brother of expelled BJP minister Lal Singh, for abusing Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti while addressing people in Kathua.
J&K Director-General of Police SP Vaid told Kashmir Reader that he has directed for filing the case against Choudhary Rajinder Singh.
A video widely shared on social media showed Singh addressing a gathering in Kathua where men reciprocated and cheered at abuses hurled against the chief minister. A few people in the audience were seen carrying the Indian national flag.
Superintendent of Police Kathua SP Patil said that the case against Singh has been registered.
A senior police official said that Singh may be arrested.
The chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, Nayeema Mehjoor, said the commission had taken suo motu cognisance of Singh’s abuse of the chief minister. “His abusive language against the chief minister is condemnable and shows his level of morality,” she said.
Revulsion broke out on social media after the video of Singh addressing the gathering went viral. Former chief minister Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to condemn the act, writing, “This is absolutely unacceptable language used against @MehboobaMufti & is unequivocally condemned with the request that @JmuKmrPolice file a FIR against this abusive individual”.
Singh’s brother Lal Singh, who was forest minister till recently, was asked to quit after he along with another BJP minister, Chander Prakash Ganga, addressed a rally organised by Hindu Ekta Manch in support of the men accused of raping and killing an 8-year-old Gujjar girl.
On Sunday, Lal Singh himself led a Dogra Swabhiman rally in Kathua where he said that 50 villagers each will take turns to hold protests at the native village of the killed girl, Kootah in Kathua district, till a CBI inquiry is ordered into the rape-and-murder case.
