Bijbehara: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and a head constable seriously injured after militants opened fire at the vehicle they were travelling in, here in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district on Tuesday.
The slain SPO has been identified as Bilal Ahmad Shah of Verinag, Anantnag district. The injured head constable is Abdul Rasheed Munshi of Ganderbal.
According to police reports, the shootout took place at about 4 PM in the afternoon, right outside the Forest Department depot along the national highway.
“Militants opened fire at the official Tata Sumo vehicle of police station Bijbehara,” a senior police officer told Kashmir Reader.
He said that the fire was retaliated but the militants managed to escape, leaving two policemen grievously injured.
“They were rushed to the Sub-District Hospital nearby, where Bilal was declared brought dead and Rasheed was shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment,” the officer said.
Medical Superintendent (MS) of the sub-district hospital, Dr Showkat, told Kashmir Reader that Rasheed has been shot in both his legs.
“He was stable but he has been shifted to Bone and Joints Hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment,” he said.
Soon after the shootout, a cache of government forces was rushed to the spot and the whole area was cordoned off.
“Searches were carried out in the area even as army used drones to try and locate the militants. The militants had, however, managed to flee by then,” a local source told Kashmir Reader.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held for the slain policeman at District Police Lines (DPL) Anantnag. Senior police officials of the area and the wailing family of the slain cop were in attendance.
