ASHTENGOO: The residents of Ashtengoo village of Bandipora district on Monday staged a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) by putting a lighted lantern on a transformer bed, which has been missing for a month after it developed a snag, and has plunged this village in darkness for over 45 days.
The protestors assembled at Ashtengoo Main Chowk and also blocked off the Sopore-Bandipora road to vehicular traffic for a couple of hours to press for their electricity demand. The protesters claimed that they haven’t received any power supply for the past several months.
Chanting anti-PDD and anti-administration slogans, the protestors alleged that PDD had totally failed to repair transformers which got damaged a month ago. The protestors alleged that they are being deliberately forced to come out on the streets as “our pleas fall on deaf ears as the concerned department is not cooperative and is playing hide and seek with the inhabitants”, an elderly protestor said.
The frequent blockade of the road during rush hours in the morning has irked employees commuting to and fro on this road.
“The frequent blockade has been irking us on a daily basis,” a bank employee said.
Later, the Tehsildar pacified the protestors after assuring them that their transformer would be made functional very soon.
