Anantnag: Students of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantipora held protests on Saturday to demand the release of a BTech student detained by police late Thursday night.
The arrested student, Musadiq Rashid, and his father Abdul Rashid Bhat were arrested by the Awantipora police following a firing incident in the area late Thursday night.
As per the police, a party of the government forces was fired at by militants from the house of Abdul Rashid Bhat, near Herpora-Kharmoad in Awantipora.
“No one was injured in the attack. The owner of the house, Abdul Rashid, and his son has been arrested for questioning,” SSP Awantipora Zahid Malik had told Kashmir Reader on Friday.
He did not respond to calls and text message by this reporter following the student protests at IUST today.
The students took out a protest rally holding placards and banners to demand the immediate release of the student.
The protesting students took the rally out of the campus and towards the main road, only to disperse later.
The students have threatened to intensify their protests if the student is not released immediately.
They said that the student was being fraudulently framed by the police, and his career was in jeopardy.
